A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” declared the head of state.
The president reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its role in civilian projects. They were completed at an accelerated pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised ongoing concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in total compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
