The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
