Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The United States central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of employment gains added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
