'It's like they never miss a pass': The Swans' Galbraith resumes clash with Manchester City.

Ethan Galbraith breaks into a smile as he reminisces about the dramatic closing stages of Swansea's remarkable turnaround triumph against Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup. That match culminated with Galbraith briefly donning a fan's glasses following the on-field celebration.

With the clock ticking into the 97th minute, Galbraith struck the post with a speculative effort from distance, and the defender promptly hammered in the rebound before charging toward the East Stand to celebrate, with the crowd swarming the players.

Stunning Reversal

This completed an extraordinary recovery given Swansea had trailed 2-0 midway through the final 45 minutes. In the delirium, there was some unintended consequences. The midfielder recalled, "There was a fan sort of calling out and we were puzzled: 'What's he on about here?' Then we saw the glasses. It was a bit of banter putting them on. We are on the pitch as footballers but we're humans, too, so to have a joke with the fans is always good."

Manchester City Challenge

The victory secured a next round game at home against Pep Guardiola's side on Wednesday, a team Galbraith ran close at the same stage of the FA Cup with his former club in February. Galbraith had arguably the best view when his former team took the lead in remarkable manner, with Jamie Donley's long-range effort from about 45 yards going in via the crossbar and the opposition keeper. Many argued that it was credited as an own goal.

"You would have expected they would've credited him for attempting the shot from that range," commented Galbraith, who began the game centrally before shifting to right wing-back after the team changed formation. That meant competing with Jack Grealish, with whom he traded tops, and the winger was among the Manchester squad who complimented the way the underdogs played positively.

Opponent's Class

"Fitness-wise they are very good but even the simple things and simple things, they can just execute repeatedly," the midfielder notes. "It seems as if they complete every delivery and they know how to manage and take the sting out of a game. You can think you're doing well and then suddenly they will just thread a ball past your midfield without you even noticing. You have to be switched on every second of the game. It demands a resilient mindset and attention just to stay in the game."

Welsh Transition

Swansea pushed to sign Galbraith in January and beat off competition to bring him in in the summer in a seven-figure transfer. He became a favorite as a popular figure across a couple of years at his former club and has swiftly done the same in his new home. At Orient he linked up again with his former manager, who earlier gave Galbraith his first extended run in first-team action on loan at a League One side from Manchester United. Then came a loan at lower division Salford, before he moved on from his boyhood club.

Growth Journey

"I was probably a slightly green going into professional soccer. I think numerous professionals would say development squad matches is very different. Sometimes it seems possession is exchanged without real physicality. There are limited physical contests. Once you start playing first-team football you have to adjust fast."

National Team Success

He has demonstrated that development for club and country, performing well for the Green and White Army, who are fighting to qualify for the international competition next summer via the knockout phase and for whom he has featured in the recent fixtures, including two matches fixtures against a football powerhouse. Ian Baraclough, Galbraith's former international manager, offered the highest praise, saying he was Northern Ireland's "midfield general" given how he manipulates the ball and his knack for a killer pass.

Starting Out

This marks quite the ride for the kid from the local area in his hometown, just outside the capital, who grew up watching his dad, his father, also a central player, play for Ballyclare Comrades.

Red Devils Debut

Galbraith's sole appearance for United came in Central Asia in 2019, a European competition trip to the Kazakh capital, where they competed on an synthetic surface and the venue ceiling was shut owing to the weather of -15C. "That proved to be a lengthy journey and it was cold out there," he comments, smiling. "The days leading up, myself and quite a few of the young lads practiced as a group, so that aided our adjustment. Just to travel with the first team and get a couple of minutes at the end was amazing."

Departing Old Trafford

How difficult was it to move on from Old Trafford, the club he transferred from aged a teenager? "This turned out relatively straightforward, because I arrived at the moment where I understood I wouldn't break through at the senior squad. I'm very appreciative for the time I spent there but it got to the point where I believed I needed to go my own route, drop down the leagues and play men's football. Now I'm slowly progressing again."

New Environment

It is the early part of the afternoon at Swansea's Fairwood training base but Galbraith has an appointment at late afternoon: a road rules assessment, another progress toward getting on the road. Before his recent move to the local area, the 24-year-old was a constant rider in Swansea's dubbed team minibus, a team vehicle driven by academy staff, the drivers, which ferries players to and from sessions and fixtures.

"It's myself a teammate, the Brazilian, Malick Yalcouyé – a former passenger used to be in it but has started driving. It's nice to socialize with the lads but I'm aiming to be the following person to drive independently and on the road. His teammate enjoys practical jokes; he's frequently playing tricks."

Public Engagement

While playing for Leyton Orient, Galbraith would mix with fans on public transport after commuting at his base. "I tried|I attempted|My aim
