Pick of the Week
The Substance Film
The filmmaker's bold commentary addresses the demanding standards for female beauty as well as the perceived horrors of growing older. Demi Moore offers a brilliant performance as Elisabeth, an aging celebrity demoted to presenting an aerobics show on TV. Forced aside by her slimy boss Harvey, she seeks out a secretive and terrifying process known as "The Substance". This generates a new version of herself called Sue, culminating in a steadily more parasitic dynamic between the two. October 17th, Paramount+
The Woman in Cabin 10 Film
This Agatha Christie-esque story stars the talented actress playing Laura, an ace reporter who opts for a hiatus from writing about global conflict to join a luxury cruise accompanied by a gravely sick wealthy inheritor and donor, her spouse, as well as other extremely wealthy guests. Yet once a mysterious woman goes overboard one night and all passengers denies she ever existed, her journalistic curiosity take over. Out now, the Netflix platform
This Supernatural Story
Steven Soderbergh tests his film-making abilities in this clever supernatural story shot entirely through the eyes of the phantom. When a household with Lucy Liu as Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe settles into their fresh home, the lens – as the unseen entity – shadows their actions. The teen shows signs of aware of the poltergeist, and the entity appears guarding her. However, the motive remains? This is an entertaining concept that remains concise, with a twist you might not see coming. This Saturday, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema Premiere
This Self-Referential Film
Nicolas Cage fully commits to his unique fame in this self-referential adventure. He acts as a self-obsessed Hollywood actor playing himself who accepts a $1m payday to attend a celebration on the Spanish island for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Contacted by the CIA to spy on the potential kingpin, the actor's unconventional method proves useful. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, Channel 4
This Creepy Thriller
The director's contained scarefest remains effective despite the lack of a sequel. Located in 1970s Colorado, a series of child abductions has rendered the children frightened. After Finney gets captured by the villain and held captive in a cellar, he dreads a fatal end. Yet the old telephone in the room repeatedly calls, with eerie communicators offering help, while the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen might rescue him. An effective horror. October 11th, late evening, on Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the struggle between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for Mammon in this director's wonderfully garish biopic about the fallen TV preacher and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield plays the venal Jim, who declares early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. The couple begin capitalizing on the nation's religious faith. It's a spectacle of bad interior design, bad makeup and insincerity, yet the lead actress manages to present the character in a likable light. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, Film4
Black Bag
This week's another release from the filmmaker is a intelligence thriller as sharp similar to the collars used by Michael Fassbender's British agent. He receives a mission to discover a double agent within their ranks from five suspects – one of whom is his spouse. Each performer are masters of calm composure, so a delicious mind game of deception or honesty takes place. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela join in the smart espionage amusement. October 17th, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema Premiere
